In many Eastside homes the hall bathroom tub has not been used for a bath in years. It takes up the best wall in the room, it is a high step for anyone over sixty, and the surround around it is usually the oldest thing in the house.
A tub-to-shower conversion with Rain City takes the tub out and builds a tiled walk-in shower in the same alcove: waterproofed base, low curb or curbless entry, a niche, a bench if the alcove allows it, a new valve and a frameless glass door. The floor and the vanity can be done in the same project.
Curb or curbless
The one decision to make before the base is built, because it changes how the floor is prepared.
Low curb
A tiled curb a few inches high keeps water in with a simple slope inside the shower. Works on any subfloor, easier to build, the standard choice.
Curbless
The shower floor slopes to the drain with no step, so the entry is flush with the bathroom floor. Easiest to enter, best for aging in place, needs the subfloor recessed or built up to create the slope, and a linear or centered drain.
Either way
A bench, a niche, a handheld on a slide bar and blocking for grab bars are planned into the tile, whether you install the bars now or later.

Will removing the tub hurt resale?
Buyers expect a tub in at least one bathroom. If the house keeps a tub elsewhere, converting the second one to a shower is usually a plus. If it is the only tub, we talk it through before you decide.
Does a tub-to-shower conversion need a permit?
Usually yes, because the drain and the valve move. We handle the application with your city.
Can the shower be curbless?
Often, if the subfloor allows the slope. Curbless showers are the easiest to step into and the ones we recommend for aging in place.
How wide is the new shower?
The same as the tub alcove, usually 60 inches, which gives a generous shower with room for a bench.
Is there a warranty on the work?
